NDC Ethiope East Assembly candidate, Okakuro (Barr.) Aghwarianovwe Novwe Ikie, has called for renewed patriotism, responsible leadership and development that reaches Nigerians where they live as the country marks its 66th Independence Anniversary.
Barr. Ikie said Nigeria’s 66-year journey reflects both resilience and challenges, but warned that independence would remain a ritual if its benefits did not reach the grassroots.
“If the ballot box can reach a community, why can’t development reach that same community?”
He cited Oko-Idjerhe in Ovu, Agbon Kingdom, which he said has no primary school, secondary school, market or health centre.
“They must be remembered not only when their votes are needed, but when development is being planned and delivered.”
Barr. Ikie said “All Before Self” is his personal philosophy of public service, putting the people’s interests before his own.
“Public service should not begin with the question, ‘What do I gain?’ It should begin with, ‘What can the people gain?’”
He said the principle would guide his approach to education, healthcare, markets, roads, drainage, youth development and environmental accountability.
“The Nigeria we want is not built only in Asaba or Abuja. It is built in the communities where Nigerians live. Independence must be felt, not merely celebrated.”
He urged Nigerians, particularly young people, not to abandon the country.
“Let us not give up on Nigeria. Let us work for the Nigeria we want. And in Agbon, let it will be All Before Self.”
