The Priests Assembly Peace and Social Justice Initiative (PPJ) has commenced community sensitization activities in Orogun as a follow-up to its Rapid Response and Norm Transformation Initiative to End Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) in Cultural Spaces in Delta State.
The advocacy campaign is part of the broader community safeguarding initiative launched in Ozoro Kingdom to promote safer cultural and community spaces for women and girls through awareness creation, social norm transformation, and community accountability.
On July 21, Pastor Anthony Chukwuneme and Pastor (Ambassador) Julius Akpovwovwo, leveraged the joint meeting of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) and the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Orogun and environs, to sensitize pastors on the need to educate their members on preventing Sexual and Gender-Based Violence. At the end of the meeting, five pastors volunteered to work with the initiative in promoting SGBV awareness within their churches and communities.
The sensitization exercise continued on July 22 at Ugono Primary School and Emonu Primary School, where Pastor Anthony Chukwuneme, alongside Mr. Foster Akpore, engaged pupils on the values of respect, equality, and non-violence.
Speaking during the exercise, Pastor Chukwuneme said, “Every child has a role to play in creating a safe environment. By showing respect to others, rejecting violence and bullying, and speaking up when something is wrong, our pupils can become ambassadors for peace and positive change in their schools and communities.”
He encouraged the pupils to report inappropriate behaviour to trusted adults and to uphold values that promote safe and inclusive learning environments.
The sensitization forms part of PPJ’s ongoing efforts, in partnership with stakeholders, to transform harmful social norms, strengthen community safeguarding mechanisms, and promote the protection of women, girls, and other vulnerable persons across Delta State.
The Rapid Response and Norm Transformation Initiative is being implemented by PPJ in collaboration with its partners under the Renewed Women’s Voice and Leadership–Nigeria Project, supported by ActionAid Nigeria and funded by Global Affairs Canada.
