Activist Blessed Oghenero Ughere, the National President of the Urhobo Progress Union (UPU) Youth Wing Worldwide, and Sir Johnathan Lokpobiri, Snr, the National President of the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC), recently convened in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State. Their meeting was a powerful demonstration of the potential for peace and unity when two communities come together in the face of adversity.

The joint call for caution and restraint by these two influential leaders sends a clear message: the Urhobo and Ijaw Nations must unite to address the underlying issues that have led to this crisis. Rather than allowing misunderstandings and boundary disputes to escalate into violence, there is an urgent need for dialogue, understanding, and mutual respect.

The longstanding relationship between the Urhobo and Ijaw Nations, marked by intermarriages and shared cultural heritage, should serve as a foundation for building lasting peace in the region. Instead of resorting to warfare and conflict, both communities must embrace the spirit of cooperation and collaboration to resolve their differences peacefully.

“It is disheartening that our society increasingly relies on warfare rather than intellectual means for conflict resolution,” said Sir Lokpobiri. He emphasized the importance of looking beyond immediate grievances and focusing on the broader goal of promoting peace and development in the Niger Delta region.

Activist Blessed Oghenero Ughere echoed this sentiment, highlighting the tragic loss of lives and collateral damage incurred in the current crisis. He called for unity and a collective voice to end the ongoing conflict and work towards a brighter future for both communities.

The recent meeting between the UPU Youth Wing and IYC leaders serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of unity and collaboration in addressing the complex challenges facing the Niger Delta region. By extending a handshake of peace and solidarity, the Urhobo and Ijaw Nations can pave the way for reconciliation, understanding, and mutual prosperity. It is time to put aside differences, embrace shared heritage, and work together towards building a peaceful and prosperous future for all.
